Book a Hotel Without Surprises: What to Look For in a Hotel Tour
In short: Hotel photos are made for the perfect moment. An honest hotel tour shows you what the hotel feels like on a normal day. With a few tricks, you can tell within minutes whether it suits your trip.
Why photos alone aren’t enough
Sound familiar? In the pictures, the room looks huge, the pool is empty and the sea is right outside the door. Then you arrive and it looks different. That is rarely deception – it’s photography: a wide-angle lens makes rooms look bigger, the best crop hides the construction site next door, and pools get photographed before the first guests show up.
Video can’t hide things as easily. As soon as the camera moves, you see distances, sizes and how everything fits together. That’s why a hotel tour is worth a look before any bigger booking. Here is what one of our tours looks like:

The checklist: 8 things to look out for
1. The real size of the room
Count the steps from the bed to the window and check whether there is still space once your suitcase is open. When someone walks through the shot, you get an instant sense of scale.
2. The view – and what’s next to it
“Sea view” can mean a lot of things. Watch whether the camera pans left and right from the balcony. What it doesn’t show is often just as telling.
3. The bathroom
Shower or bathtub, window or none, open-plan or with a door: a video quickly shows whether the bathroom works for you – especially if you’re not travelling alone.
4. Distances
How far is it from your room to the pool, the restaurant, the beach? A good tour connects the places instead of showing isolated rooms.
5. Pool and loungers
Are there enough loungers for everyone? Is there shade? Is the pool made for swimming or mostly for photos?
6. Breakfast and restaurant
Buffet or à la carte, indoors or outdoors, calm or busy: a video shows you what the restaurant feels like when guests are there.
7. Sound
Turn the sound on. Traffic noise, music from the pool bar or the sound of the sea tell you more about the atmosphere than any photo.
8. The surroundings
What is right outside the door? A main road, a beach, restaurants within walking distance? Good hotel tours also show the way out.
How to spot an honest hotel tour
- It takes its time: a 30-second clip shows highlights, a tour shows the whole hotel.
- It shows the ordinary, too: corridors, lifts, the walk to breakfast – not just the suite and the sunset.
- It puts things in context: a short note on who the hotel is perfect for, and who it isn’t, helps you more than any praise.
- It’s recent: hotels renovate and restaurants change. Check when the video was published.
How we show hotels
At Hotelmoments we stay 3–4 nights at every hotel before we edit the tour. That way we experience the property at different times of day, eat at the restaurant and lie by the pool like every other guest. You’ll find all our tours on our hotel tours page and on YouTube.
Know a hotel that deserves an honest tour? Recommend it to us – in the community ranking you help decide which hotel we visit next.
