Workation in the Algarve: Praia do Canal Nature Retreat, Between Laptop and Atlantic
Working remotely means your desk could, in theory, be anywhere. In practice, not every beautiful hotel is a good place to work. A successful workation depends on different things than a pure holiday: stable internet, a spot where you can sit and focus, quiet – and, once you log off, something that clears your head again.
Looking for exactly that mix, we ended up on the wild west coast of the Algarve. Based on our research, Praia do Canal Nature Retreat near Aljezur is one of the most interesting places in the region if you want to combine work and downtime. Here’s what the property offers, who it suits and what to clarify before booking.
The other Algarve: the west coast around Aljezur
Many people picture the Algarve’s south coast, with its sheltered beaches, resorts and golf courses. The west coast is different: rougher, quieter, with high cliffs, Atlantic surf and beaches such as Praia da Arrifana. Much of this stretch of coast lies within the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
Aljezur is a small town with a ruined castle above its rooftops. Praia do Canal Nature Retreat is about a ten-minute drive outside town, on an estate of around 220 hectares within the natural park. Staying here means staying away from the bustle – among hills, scrubland and views of the sea.

Working with a view: how well does it suit remote work?
A luxury hotel isn’t automatically a good office. That’s why it pays to look closely at what really matters when you work.
Internet
According to booking platforms, free Wi-Fi is available throughout the property. Still, ask how fast the connection is in your room before you book – especially if your day is full of video calls. Ask specifically for download and upload speeds.
Workspace
For long working days, a room category with more space is worth it. The suites with garden or rooftop terraces offer not only room for a laptop but also somewhere to take your lunch break outdoors. If you’d rather look out over the landscape, choose a room with a balcony. If you want a change of scene, the lounge and outdoor areas are an alternative to your room.
Quiet and balance
The secluded location is an advantage for focused work: little traffic, few distractions. After work, balance is right on the doorstep – a few lengths in the pool, the sauna in the spa or a walk through the landscape. Trails of the Rota Vicentina, a well-known network of walking routes in south-west Portugal, also run around Aljezur.
One goal for a free afternoon is the beach the hotel is named after: Praia do Canal is a pebble beach with no beach bar and no lifeguards, reachable only via dirt tracks and paths. In return, you can see Pedra da Agulha from there – a slender rock needle in the sea and one of the best-known sights of the Costa Vicentina.
Time zone
Portugal is one hour behind Central European Time. A 9 a.m. meeting in Berlin, Vienna or Zurich starts at 8 a.m. for you. Start early, and you’re free in the afternoon, when the light over the Atlantic is at its best.
Getting there
You’ll hardly manage without a car. The nearest major airports are Faro and Lisbon, and from either you continue by rental car. You’ll also drive to the beaches and into Aljezur.
Who Praia do Canal suits – and who it doesn’t
It’s a good fit if you …
- want to work with focus and properly relax in your free time,
- prefer nature, space and quiet over a lively city,
- value a spa and good food as a counterbalance to the screen,
- are planning a workation for two where you won’t both be working the same hours.
It’s less suitable if you …
- want a coworking community, cafés and evening life within walking distance – then a city like Lisbon or a town on the south coast is the better choice,
- want to get around without a car,
- are on a tight budget; prices vary considerably by season.
Our tips for your workation in the Algarve
- Check the internet in advance: ask for the speeds and whether they apply to your room category.
- Plan a backup: an eSIM or mobile hotspot helps if the connection ever drops.
- Choose the right room: for longer stays, go one category bigger – you’ll spend your working hours there too.
- Book the rental car right away: on the west coast it’s your most important way of getting around.
- Use the shoulder season: spring and autumn are usually quieter than high summer.
- Set fixed times: plan work blocks and downtime deliberately. Otherwise workation and holiday quickly blur into neither.
Conclusion: focused work where the Algarve is still wild
Praia do Canal Nature Retreat isn’t a coworking hotel with an open-plan office; it’s a retreat where focused work and nature combine well. If you check the internet connection in advance and plan for a car, you’ll find a workation where clocking off matters almost as much as the working day.
