The Hotel Website Today: Why You Don’t Need an Expensive Site – but Social Media and Direct Booking

Many hotels pour money into elaborate websites: animations, nested menus, countless sub-pages. Yet many guests no longer discover a hotel through its homepage, but through a video on Instagram, TikTok or YouTube, on Google Maps or via a recommendation. After that, the website mainly has one job: to be the place where guests can check quickly and book directly.
Here’s what a hotel website really needs to do today – and why social media and direct booking matter more than any bells and whistles.
Where guests see your hotel first
The path to a booking rarely starts on the hotel website. It’s more likely to look like this: a reel sparks curiosity, the profile shows more, Google Maps adds location and reviews, a YouTube video shows the hotel in detail – and only then comes the click to the website or a booking platform.
For hotels, that means your social media presence is the shop window and your website is the till. The two should match, so guests instantly recognise you when they switch from one to the other.
What a hotel website really needs today
Fast and built for smartphones
Many visitors arrive on their phones, often straight from an app. If the page loads slowly, they’re gone. A Google analysis found that the probability of a bounce increases by 123 per cent as a mobile page’s load time grows from one second to ten. Fewer effects, smaller images and a clear structure are therefore often more effective than an elaborate design.
A visible booking button
The most important button on a hotel website is “Book now” – clearly visible on every page, including on mobile. Behind it should be a booking engine that shows availability and prices straight away. Every extra step costs bookings.
Real photos and videos
Guests want to see what to expect: room, bathroom, breakfast, pool, surroundings. A short video or an embedded hotel tour often says more than ten pages of text. We explain why moving images work so well in our article on why a hotel video says more than 100 photos.
The essentials at a glance
Location and directions, room types, facilities, check-in times, contact details. Often that’s all you need – plus any legally required information, such as the imprint and privacy policy required in Germany.
Direct booking: why it pays off for hotels
Booking platforms bring reach, but charge commission for it. Every booking through your own website saves that cost. And with a direct booking, you have direct contact with the guest, can reach out personally before arrival and are more likely to win them back.
A few simple things help guests book direct:
- Same price or better: booking direct shouldn’t cost more than on a platform. Small extras such as a welcome drink or late check-out make the difference.
- Keep your Google Business Profile up to date: with a business profile and a connected booking engine, hotels can get free booking links in Google Search and Google Maps that lead straight to their own booking page.
- Link in bio: every social media profile should link directly to the booking page, not just the homepage.
Social media as your shop window
A well-kept social media presence shows what a stay feels like: morning light on the terrace, the team, breakfast, the surroundings. What matters isn’t posting every day, but regular, good content – and a clear path to booking. In-depth YouTube videos also make sure your hotel is found when someone searches specifically. Why that matters so much is explained in our article on content creators for hotels.
Checklist: the lean hotel website
- Does the site load quickly on mobile? (Test it with Google’s PageSpeed Insights, for example.)
- Is “Book now” visible on every page?
- Do photos and videos show the real rooms and spaces?
- Are location, room types, facilities and contact details easy to find?
- Does the site match the look of your social media presence?
- Is your Google Business Profile complete and linked to your booking engine?
- Do all social media profiles link straight to the booking page?
- Are the legally required pages, such as imprint and privacy policy, in place?
How we support hotels
At Hotelmoments we don’t just create content – we also build websites for hotels: simple, fast and good-looking, in the style of your social media presence, with a clear path to direct booking. And we provide the matching content: an in-depth hotel tour for YouTube, reels and photos. That way everything fits together, from the first video to the booking. Here’s an example of one of our hotel tours:
YouTube loads only after you click
Conclusion: less website, more bookings
A hotel website doesn’t need to be spectacular today. It needs to be fast, match your social media presence and lead guests straight to a direct booking. Social media is the shop window, your own site is the till – and good content connects the two.
