South Africa with Kids: 8 Family Hotels from Cape Town to a Malaria-Free Safari

South Africa is a dream destination for many families: penguins on the beach, elephants on safari, picnics on wine estates and a city like Cape Town wedged between mountains and sea. But with children, some very specific questions come up before you book. Where is it malaria-free? From what age can kids go on game drives? And which hotels are genuinely set up for families?

Here are the key answers for a family holiday in South Africa – and, based on our research, eight hotels and lodges where children aren’t just tolerated but truly welcome.

What to know before you go

Malaria-free safaris

With young children, many families choose a safari in a malaria-free area. These include the game reserves of the Eastern Cape, Madikwe Game Reserve and Pilanesberg National Park in the North West, and the Kalahari in the Northern Cape. Kruger National Park and the north-east are a different story – get travel health advice before you go.

Age limits on safari

Many lodges only take children on regular game drives from around six, and on walking safaris often from twelve. Family-friendly lodges therefore offer private vehicles, shorter drives or their own kids’ programmes. Check the rules for your children’s ages before booking.

When to go and route ideas

On the Cape, summer runs from December to February, with long, dry days. On the Garden Route, you can watch whales from around June to November. Be realistic about distances: South Africa is big, and between Cape Town and the northern safari areas it’s better to fly than to spend hours in the car. A tried-and-tested family route: a few days in Cape Town, then the Winelands, the Garden Route and finally a malaria-free safari in the Eastern Cape.

Cape Town: city, beach and mountain

One&Only Cape Town

This resort at the V&A Waterfront is a small oasis in the middle of the city, with views of Table Mountain. Its KidsOnly Club is free for children aged four to eleven, with crafts, games and outings, and there’s a separate programme for teens. Families can book interconnecting rooms, and the aquarium and harbour boat trips are within walking distance.

The Garden Route: ocean and whales

The Plettenberg, Plettenberg Bay

On a headland above the bay, you look out to sea – and from around June to November, with a little luck, you can spot whales from the terrace. For families there are two standalone villas with private pools and a babysitting service. With children under six, a ground-floor room is a good idea, as the upper rooms have balconies.

Tips for a family holiday in South Africa

  1. Book early: family suites and kids’ programmes are limited, especially in school holidays.
  2. Reserve a hire car with child seats: around Cape Town and on the Garden Route, a car gives you the most flexibility.
  3. Take sun protection seriously: the Cape sun is strong, even when it’s windy and cool.
  4. Slow down: fewer stops and longer stays work best – kids need breaks, and safari days start very early.
  5. Check entry rules for children: minors may need specific documents. Check with official sources in good time.

Conclusion: South Africa is a fantastic family destination

With a little planning, South Africa with kids is easier than many people think. Choose a malaria-free safari, know the lodges’ age rules and book hotels with genuine family offerings, and you’ll share a trip full of wildlife, nature and adventure.
