Greece Beyond the Beaches: 9 Remarkable Places from Zagori to the Mani

Most people picture Greece as islands, beaches and harbourside tavernas. All lovely – but only part of the story. Between the mountains of the north and the southern tip of the Peloponnese lie places that are every bit as impressive: monasteries perched on rock pillars, a bridge and a canal that made engineering history, and an ancient shipwreck you can visit on a dive.
Based on our research, we’ve chosen nine remarkable places in Greece beyond the beaches. We’ve ordered them from north to south, so you can link them up into a road trip.
In the north: mountains, gorges and monasteries
1. Zagori and the Vikos Gorge
In the Pindus Mountains of north-western Greece lie the Zagori villages: houses, churches and arched bridges built from grey stone, linked by old cobbled mule paths. The Zagori Cultural Landscape has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 2023. Right next to it is the Vikos Gorge, counted among the deepest in the world relative to its width. Hikers can walk its length in a day.
Best for: hikers, peace and quiet, spring and autumn trips
2. Meteora
In Thessaly, huge sandstone pillars rise from the plain, crowned by medieval monasteries. The name roughly means “suspended in the air” – and that’s exactly how it looks. Meteora has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1988; six monasteries are still active and open to visitors. The base is the small town of Kalambaka. Arrive early in the morning, before the day-trippers do.
Best for: photography, culture, sunrises
In central Greece: an oracle and hot springs
3. Delphi
On the slopes of Mount Parnassus stood the ancient Sanctuary of Apollo, home to the most famous oracle of the Greek world. The ruins of its temple, theatre and stadium have been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1987, and the museum displays finds such as the bronze Charioteer. The view across the olive-filled valley to the Gulf of Corinth is one of the finest in the country.
Best for: history, a day trip from Athens
4. Edipsos on Evia
In the north of Evia, an island linked to the mainland by bridge, more than 80 hot springs bubble up in Edipsos. Ancient writers such as Aristotle already mentioned them. In places, the warm thermal water flows straight into the sea, so you can bathe in natural pools on the beach. For more comfort, stay at Thermae Sylla, a hotel dating from 1897 with a spa and thermal pools.

Best for: wellness, the shoulder season, a few quiet days
5. Alonissos and its underwater museum
Off Alonissos in the Northern Sporades lies the wreck of a merchant ship that sank around 425 BC carrying some 3,000 wine amphorae. Since 2020 it has been open as Greece’s first underwater museum – for suitably qualified divers, accompanied by guides. Non-divers can experience the wreck through virtual reality at the visitor centre. The area is part of the National Marine Park of Alonissos and the Northern Sporades.
Best for: divers, nature lovers, a quiet island without mass tourism
On the way to the Peloponnese: engineering masterpieces
6. The Rio–Antirrio Bridge
Since 2004, the Rio–Antirrio Bridge has spanned the strait between the mainland and the Peloponnese. At around 2.9 kilometres, it’s one of the longest multi-span cable-stayed bridges in the world. Its piers stand in deep water in an earthquake zone – one reason engineers regard it as a masterpiece. It looks its best at sunset from the waterfront in Rio.
Best for: road trips, engineering fans
7. The Corinth Canal
Around 6.3 kilometres long, the canal slices through the Isthmus of Corinth to link the Gulf of Corinth with the Saronic Gulf. The idea is more than 2,500 years old, but the canal only opened in 1893. From the bridges you look down as much as 80 metres to the narrow ribbon of water between sheer rock walls. After restoration work, it reopened to shipping in June 2026.
Best for: a stop on the way from Athens to the Peloponnese
In the southern Peloponnese: a rock town and tower houses
8. Monemvasia
Off the east coast of the Peloponnese, a massive rock rises from the sea, connected to the mainland only by a narrow causeway. Its name means “single entrance”. Behind it hides a medieval town of narrow lanes, churches and stone houses where there’s no room for cars. In the evening, once the day visitors have left, the atmosphere is magical.
Best for: couples, romance, photography
9. The Mani and its tower houses
The middle finger of the Peloponnese is barren, rocky and beautiful. The Mani is known for slender stone tower houses that once offered protection during feuds between families. Villages such as Vathia feel like they belong to another era. At the tip of the peninsula lies Cape Tainaron, the southernmost point of mainland Greece.
Best for: road trips, hiking, unspoilt Greece
Tips for exploring Greece beyond the beaches
- Travel by hire car: most of these places are easiest to reach by car. For the whole route from Zagori to the Mani, plan at least two weeks.
- Choose spring or autumn: for hiking and sightseeing, April to June and September to October are more pleasant than the heat of high summer.
- Start early: at famous sites such as Meteora or Delphi, mornings are much quieter.
- Mix it up: after a few days of sightseeing, a beach day does you good. Find island ideas in our article on the most beautiful islands in the world, and if you’d like a resort to finish, see our guide to all-inclusive in Greece.
Conclusion: Greece is more than sun and sand
Explore Greece beyond the beaches and you’ll discover a country full of history, nature and engineering. From the stone bridges of Zagori to the monasteries of Meteora and the tower houses of the Mani, these nine places show how varied Greece is – and why it’s worth visiting outside the swimming season too.
